'Hunger Games' Soundtrack Lands Taylor Swift, Arcade Fire

Decemberists and Civil Wars also on the disc.

The soundtrack to "The Hunger Games"
will feature a bumper crop of new and unreleased songs by Taylor Swift, the Arcade Fire and the Decemberists.

The album will be produced by Grammy-winning producer T Bone Burnett and released before the movie hits theaters on March 23. Burnett and the group the Civil Wars got together to write an original tune for the CD with Swift, the first single, "Safe and Sound," which was released to iTunes on December 23. The tune shot to #1 on the iTunes singles list within 24 hours of release.

Also serving up fresh tracks are the Arcade Fire, who collaborated with Burnett on "Horn of Plenty," and the Decemberists, who've offered up the original song "One Engine." The rest of the lineup has not been released, but according to a press release the soundtrack will feature all new songs based on themes that figure into the movie's storyline.

Oscar-winning composer Danny Elfman recently exited the film, citing scheduling issues as he works to finish up the music for "Dark Shadows" and "Men in Black 3." He was replaced by James Newton Howard, who is responsible for dozens of famous scores, including "Batman Begins."

Inspired by the best-selling young-adult novel by Suzanne Collins, "The Hunger Games" follows the path of 16-year-old Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence), who is chosen to compete in a vicious televised tournament in which 24 teenagers from a post-apocalyptic society fight to the death for the entertainment of the masses. The film also stars Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth, as well as Woody Harrelson and rocker Lenny Kravitz.

Lawrence will not only star in the movie, but she will also lend her vocals
to the soundtrack. Producer Burnett had high praise for her singing, telling MTV it was "beautiful. She did great. She's singing great. Killer actor too."

Fans are totally geeked about the new big-screen adaptation that could be the next-generation "Twilight" series, which is why we put together our list of the top 10 "Games" moments of 2011.

What other artists do you think would fit on The Hunger Games soundtrack? Tell us on Facebook!

'The Voice' Stars Say Show Is 'Serious' But 'Fun'1662699

'I think the commonality between all four of our coaches is their passion for music,' show host Carson Daly says.

For die-hard fans of reality TV singing contests who just can't get enough, NBC has a treat for you in the form of "The Voice." Hosted by Carson Daly and featuring superstar mentors Christina Aguilera, Cee-Lo Green, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton, the show hopes to discover yet another future pop star. MTV caught up with the new reality TV cast recently to get some scoop on the music veterans working on the show.

"I'm really excited about 'The Voice,' " Daly said. "I think the commonality between all four of our coaches is their passion for music, and they're all excellent voices, they're all very business savvy." Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine guaranteed that while they are taking the job seriously, there's plenty of lightheartedness too. "This show is just fun, and throughout the whole thing, we're interacting with each other," he said. "And yeah, it's serious, it's a competition, [and] we want these guys to succeed." "We've been a little apprehensive about allowing ourselves to be considered or called judges," Green admitted. "At the end of the day, we're doing a bit more mentoring and a little more coaching more than we're judging." Green has also said that part of the draw of "The Voice" is its unconventional concept. "At first, I thought it was a very cool and original concept," Green said, speaking of the format in which coaches sit with their backs to contestants to focus on their vocals instead of their looks as they decide whether to mentor them through later rounds. ‪"We're all coming from such different worlds that there's a coexistence," he added. "[But] there's a bit of friendly competition because we're all playing to win." After getting advice from the professional singers during battle phases — where they can also call in choreographers, stylists and producers to help their charges — the wannabe stars will go on to live performance shows where the TV audience will vote on who advances and wins the $100,000 prize and recording contract. "The Voice" premieres Tuesday (April 26) at 9 p.m. ET.

U2, Taylor Swift Top List Of 2011's Highest-Grossing Tours1676586

U2's 360 Tour is the year's most profitable in the U.S. and worldwide.
By James Montgomery

U2 didn't even release an album in 2011, but that didn't stop them from raking in plenty of cash. The iconic Irish quartet topped Pollstar's list of the year's most profitable tours, as their massive 360 Tour moved an impressive 2.4 million tickets worldwide, grossing more than $230 million globally. Their North American dates — which were postponed (and subsequently rescheduled) last year as Bono recovered from back surgery — made $156 million, good enough to give them the highest-grossing tour on this continent, too.

Taylor Swift had 2011's second most-profitable North American tour, as her expansive Speak Now jaunt racked up $97.7 million at the box office. Swift's country contemporary Kenny Chesney came in at #3, bringing in nearly $85 million in ticket sales, followed by Lady Gaga, who, despite wrapping up the North American leg of her Monster Ball Tour in April, still managed to bring in $63.7 million at the box office. Bon Jovi rounds out Pollstar's top five, grossing more than $57 million. Kanye West and Jay-Z's Throne tour ($48 million), Lil Wayne's "I Am Still Music" trek ($44 million), Britney Spears ($38 million) and Katy Perry ($28 million) also made the Top 25 in North America. British boy band Take That's reunion tour came in second to U2's 360 trek based on worldwide receipts, making $224 million. Bon Jovi grossed nearly $150 million worldwide, good enough for third, with tours by Swift ($104 million worldwide) and Roger Waters ($103 million) rounding out the top five. Also making Pollstar's worldwide list were Rihanna, the Foo Fighters, Justin Bieber, Usher and the Kings of Leon. Did you attend any of the highest-grossing tours in 2011? Let us know in the comments!

Christina Aguilera Will Return To 'The Voice'1666697

Rest of the panel is also signed on to return.
By Gil Kaufman

Christina Aguilera On 'The Voice'
Photo: NBC

Unlike the typical judges'-panel drama unfolding over at "American Idol," it looks like NBC newcomer "The Voice" has locked down its diva for a second season: Christina Aguilera will be back on the small screen in the spring. According to The Hollywood Reporter, despite rumors to the contrary, an unnamed source said Aguilera actually agreed to give it another go on the reality singing competition "weeks ago." The good news for fans of the upstart show is that Aguilera will be seated in the tall-backed chairs next to all her homeboys, as Maroon 5 singer Adam Levine, country star Blake Shelton and Cee Lo Green have also officially re-inked. Citing an unnamed source, Us Weekly reported Thursday (June 30) that the entire quartet have signed on for a second season. Shelton recently told a Knoxville, Tennessee, radio station that he'd love to come back for another run. "The reality of it is, you've got four different artists who are doing completely different things and a network that has a time schedule that they want things to happen in," he said. "Who knows what'll happen, but I'd hate to miss it." Levine — who mentored Javier Colon to a win on Wednesday night — also seemed eager to make a return engagement. "Yeah, that's the question that everyone's asking me," he told the Reporter earlier this week about the constant questions about whether he'll be back. "I'd hate to say for sure, but I think so. If they'll have me, I'd be delighted to be back." The show has been renewed for another season and is expected to make its second bow after the Super Bowl in the spring. The Reporter also revealed that the pay scale on the show has Aguilera far out-earning her fellow coaches, raking in a reported $225,000 per episode to the men's $75,000 each. The quick re-sign of Aguilera is in contrast to the drama at the granddaddy of hit TV reality singing shows, "Idol." While veteran judge Randy Jackson and newbie Aerosmith singer Steven Tyler are onboard for the upcoming 11th season, it remains unclear if the other new face of the series, Jennifer Lopez, will be back. With her music career revived, thanks to the exposure of "Idol," Lopez has been coy about whether she's willing to give it another shot. "You know, this is the question of the hour," she said earlier this month in an interview with BBC's Radio 1. "I don't know. I haven't been forced to make a decision, and I'm glad about that because, honestly, I'm very on the fence about it. I had an amazing time doing it and I loved it, but I have a lot of other things happening, and it's going to come down to me making a choice of what I want to do for the next year, and we're not really at the breaking point of, 'You have to make a decision right now!' I'm just really enjoying the time of just waiting and seeing." Are you happy the panel will be back on "The Voice"? Let us know in the comments!

Michael Jackson's Family Not Out For 'Revenge'1675068

'There is nothing you can do here today that will bring Michael back,' Joe and Katherine Jackson say in a statement read at Conrad Murray hearing.
By Andrea Duncan-Mao, with reporting by Gil Kaufman

Katherine Jackson arrives for the sentencing of Dr. Conrad Murray at the Los Angeles Superior Court on November 29, 2011 in Los Angeles, California. Murray was convicted on November 7 for the 2009 death of Jackson from an overdose of the powerful anesthetic propofol and faces up to four years in state prison. (Photo by )

At Tuesday's (November 29) sentencing hearing for Dr. Conrad Murray — where Michael Jackson's former personal physician received four years in jail for involuntary manslaughter — a statement from Jackson's parents was read in court.

"We still look at each other in disbelief: Is it really possible he is gone? It is simply against the natural order of things," Joe and Katherine Jackson said in the statement, read by Jackson family attorney Brian Panish. "We are not here to seek revenge. There is nothing you can do here today that will bring Michael back." Do you think Conrad Murray deserved the maximum sentence? Let us know on Facebook. Along with Katherine, Michael's siblings LaToya, Jermaine, Randy and Rebbie were also reportedly in attendance at the hearing. In regards to the sentence, the family said in the statement: "We respectfully request you impose a sentence that reminds physicians they cannot sell their services to the highest bidder." The judge agreed, lamenting that due to a new California law to address overcrowding in prisons, he was unable to sentence Murray to state prison. Stating that Murray practiced "horrible medicine" and had "absolutely no remorse," Judge Michael Pastor declined the defense's motion for probation and handed down the stiffest sentence possible — four years — which Murray will most likely serve in a Los Angeles county jail or on home confinement. Upon leaving the courthouse, Michael's brother Jermaine, when asked if the four-year sentence was enough, shook his head and said, "No." Katherine told local TV station KTLA, "Four years is not enough for someone's life. It won't bring him back. But at least he got the maximum, and I thought the judge was very, very fair."

Where Will Kim Kardashian, Lady Gaga Party On New Year's?1676540

From New York to L.A., celebs have plans to ring in 2012 with a bang.
By Jocelyn Vena

New Year's Eve is the last chance you'll have to party in 2011. And as the days to plan out your big night begin to dwindle, MTV News is rounding up some of the biggest parties on the planet. From Los Angeles to New York, there's something for everyone. The Kardashians will be hosting several parties all over Las Vegas. Kim will be at Tao (for a fee of reportedly $600,000), Kourtney, along with the Madden Brothers, will party it up at Chateau Nightclub & Gardens at Paris while Rob has it on lock at Tryst.

Other big Sin City parties include Chris Brown's shindig at Pure, Mary J. Blige's bash at RPM Nightclub, Bruno Mars at The Bank and B.o.B at LAX (the club, not the airport). Fergie and will.i.am will both be in Vegas to ring in 2012. The Black Eyed Peas' leading lady will be at 1OAK, while will.i.am be DJing at Surrender. Professional party rockers LMFAO will be shufflin' all night long at Haze Nightclub at Aria. Newly engaged John Legend will perform at the Palms with T-Pain and Paul Oakenfold. As celeb-filled as it may seem, not all the stars will be in Vegas. In Los Angeles, Mario Lopez is hosting a party at Hollywood & Highland that boasts performances by Lupe Fiasco and Cobra Starship. And in Chicago, "American Idol" alum Lee DeWyze will be at the Hard Rock Hotel with DJ Chris Kennedy (Chris Masterson) spinning tunes. Kanye West's plans have yet to be determined, but he recently tweeted he's looking for a place to DJ right into 2012. We're sure someone will find a place for him at their party.

New York is the home of all things New Year's. Lady Gaga has been booked to perform on two NYE specials: the 40th annual "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve" and the Japanese program "Kohaku Uta Gassen." For those who want to snuggle up on their couch and avoid all the partying madness, MTV has your back. This year Demi Lovato, Mac Miller, Selena Gomez, J. Cole, Jason Derulo and more will be on hand for "NYE in NYC 2012," which will air live at 11 p.m. ET on Saturday (December 31) from Times Square, where the famous ball drops on, you guessed it, MTV. What are your New Year's Eve plans? Let us know in the comments!

'Breaking Dawn' Reveals Make Best 'Twilight' Year Yet

'Twilight Tuesday' rounds up video of Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner talking the wedding, honeymoon and being shirtless.
By Kara Warner

We knew 2011 was going to be a big year in the world of "Twilight" news. The fanbase seemed to keep growing by the hour, as did the excitement surrounding the release of "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn- Part 1." The release of a new "Twilight" film also meant that we'd be seeing a lot of the blockbuster franchise's superstars as they promoted the film — and, boy, was MTV News lucky with how much time we ended up spending with Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner and the rest of the gang this year. As such, this week's "Twilight Tuesday" is dedicated to the best and brightest of those interviews with our favorite stars.

Our first encounter with a "Twilight" star was our chat with Pattinson at the Golden Globes, during which he provided us with a giggly reaction to the first "Breaking Dawn - Part 1" still of Bella and Edward in bed, as well as his positive reviews of Stewart playing a vampire. "It's like she wanted to do it the entire time," he told us. "It's really funny, it's like a completely different environment on set when she's a vampire and when she's not. I think she's going to do it really well."

There were also plenty of teases about the film's most highly anticipated scenes, including the wedding of Edward and Bella and the honeymoon sex scene. Of seeing Stewart in a wedding dress during the filming of their characters' nuptials, Pattinson said, "She looked amazing. I really didn't do much than just stand there."

Stewart later said of the experience: "It was very, very emotional for me."

Pattinson added, "You kind of realize what the groom's position in a wedding is, which, in reality, is basically a prop. You stand there in a suit, and then everyone is looking at the girl."

One scene in which everyone was most certainly not just looking at the girl is the first sex scene between Edward and Bella on their wedding night. "I think we had some really interesting ideas about [the love scene]," Pattinson said when we caught up with him at the "Water for Elephants" press junket. "It's kind of interesting, as well, having to do it in the context of PG-13. It makes it more interesting."

Speaking to all the hype about the big moment, Pattinson said that although there was a lot of pressure to deliver some major fireworks in the scene, he was confident he'd give a convincing performance. "That's the one time I have felt like the coolest person," Pattinson admitted with a laugh. "I was like, 'This is easy!' I can fulfill people's sexual fantasy expectations without even thinking, piece of cake. That isn't acting," he joked. "The only thing [that was difficult] is the vanity aspect," Pattinson continued. "Taylor [Lautner] just ruined the whole series for me. As soon as he buffed up, I'm like, 'Well, I'm throwing in the towel' on 'New Moon.' "

Speaking of Lautner and his chiseled abs, the heartthrob told us that he had to actively campaign to director Bill Condon and the powers that be to limit his amount of shirtlessness in the film, much to the disappointment of his devoted fan following.

"I got it down to one time, one time in the movie, and it literally lasts for two seconds," Lautner said proudly of his single shirtless shot. "There was some negotiating for sure. There was more [shirtless scenes] when I read the original script, trust me," he said. "And I got it down to a very, very small amount, which I was so happy with."

Other interview highlights included the unexpected, off-the-cuff, informal moments wherein our favorite stars played ball with a few of our more-outlandish requests and questions. Case in point: When we asked Jackson Rathbone to help read off a few of the 2011 MTV Movie Awards nominees in song, which he did in good spirits and with aplomb. Then there was the "Breaking Dawn" version of the always-entertaining "Yes/No Show" with Pattinson, Stewart and Lautner.

And those are just a small collection of our favorites from 2011 alone. Only time will tell what 2012 will bring as we gear up for the "epic" conclusion to the franchise, "Breaking Dawn - Part 2." It goes without saying that we can't wait.

Check out everything we've got on "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2."

Beyonce, Britney Spears And More: 25 Best Songs Of 20111675901

We count down the year's most memorable musical moments, in Bigger Than the Sound.
By James Montgomery

In 2011, we shuffled and shook it out. We found love and decided to dance until the world ends. We rolled in the deep and celebrated the boys with the booming systems. Shoot, at one point, we even went to Paris with Will Ferrell. It was, to say the very least, an interesting 12 months.

So, how else to sum up the year than with my picks for the 25 Best Songs of 2011: odes to partying and pumped-up kicks, songs of sadness and beauty, tunes about getting loaded and getting revenge. Pop, hip-hop, rock, bed-tronica, they're all here, and they're all important in some way, mostly because they all helped guide us through a rather tumultuous time. But that's enough from me, let's get to the songs. Oh, and I'd like to hear your picks too — drop me a line in the comments below. So now, on with the countdown. 25. Nicola Roberts, "Beat of My Drum": Supremely saccharine single from erstwhile Girls Aloud member mashes together every notable pop moment in recent history, yet somehow manages to be better that the sum of its parts. That's thanks mostly to the supercharged, sing-a-long chorus, where the whole thing comes together in a head-spinning rush. She should go solo more often. 24. Against Me!, "Russian Spies": Searing, surging punk from Gainesville lifers proves their time on Sire Records didn't soften them one bit. It only made them more resolute. And, strangely, sadder too. 23. Kreayshawn, "Gucci Gucci": Either the smartest song of 2011 or the dumbest, the beauty of "Gucci Gucci" — and Kreayshawn, for that matter — is that the answer is probably both. The goofy, horror-movie synth squiggle, the dollops of low-end whomp, the part where Kreay claims to have swag coming out her ovaries ... it's all good. Even if it's not. 22. Gospel Music, "This Town Doesn't Have Enough Bars for Both Of Us": Peppy, poppy, pocket-rock that laments the lack of quality drinking establishments in Owen Holmes' hometown of Jacksonville, Florida, and dares to ponder one of life's great post-breakup quandaries: When does our place become just my place? He's not smart enough to know the answer; instead, he spends his genius on barroom bon mots like, "I'm not drinking anymore/ But I'm not drinking any less." Works for me. 21. Demi Lovato, "Skyscraper": For about a week, this was the biggest song in the world (or the Internet), a fact that had nothing to do with irony, our nascent sense of superiority or kittens, and everything to do with the startling connection Lovato makes with the track itself. Oh, and the fact that she sings the absolute beejezus out of it. Given everything that's happened in Lovato's life, that connection makes sense, but it's the maturity she shows on the song — and that final, chill-inducing chorus — that opened eyes, and served notice. Welcome to the club, Demi. 20. Lykke Li, "Get Some": Overlooked, otherworldly single off Li's equally overlooked (and otherworldly) Wounded Rhymes album, this one is very much about sex. Thumping, bumping, panting ... and then Li pushes it all over the top with her smoldering, sumptuous vocals. The kind of song that requires a cigarette and a cold shower after repeat listens. 19. The Black Keys, "Lonely Boy": After spending portions of their breakout Brothers album getting slightly contemplative, the Keys roar back with "Lonely Boy," a song that only contemplates how best to make a guitar rev like a V-8 engine. A hard-charging, and even harder-chugging treat (with an equally hard-partying music video), it's the kind of classic claptrap you always knew they were capable of making. 18. Chris Brown, "Beautiful People": Folks can talk about Brown's hip-hop turn on "Look at Me Now," but this single represents his biggest reinvention to date. A slippery, shiny club track helmed by Benny Benassi, like most of Breezy's work it is undeniably sexy, but it's also subtly smart too. And that's where he made his biggest strides. Also, unlike "Look at Me Now," he doesn't even mention Mr. Miyagi once. 17. YACHT, "Dystopia (The Earth Is on Fire)": Every day the sky gets lower (lowerlowerlower!) And every day the flames get higher (higherhigherhigher!) So, with apologies to Rock Master Scott and the Dynamic Three, this disco duo just decide to let the motherf---er burn. 16. Washed Out, "Eyes be Closed": Massively ebbing and echoing bed-tronica (or, you know, "chillwave") from some dude in Perry, Georgia. Bonus: Sounds nothing like Perry, Georgia. 15. Lil Wayne, "6 Foot 7 Foot": Weezy and producer Bangladesh may still hate each other (or maybe they've made up, I can't remember), but there's no denying that both men are better off together. "6 Foot" starts with Harry Belafonte's "The Banana Boat Song," then twists it into something else entirely. Knotty and slightly seizure-inducing, it's like "A Milli" times, well, a million. 14. Nicki Minaj, "Super Bass": The unlikely champion of the Summer Jam Sweepstakes, it started life almost as an afterthought (a bonus track on the Pink Friday deluxe edition) and ended up being Nicki's breakthrough hit. Sometimes things just work out that way. Here's to the guys with the booming systems. 13. LMFAO, "Party Rock Anthem": It's either the stoopidest song in recent memory, or perhaps LMFAO's magnum opus (or maybe both), but why ponder points like that when the end result is this good. From its ebola-catchy hook to party-hearty machinations, this one is just begging to be blasted ... and shuffled to. 12. Foster The People, "Pumped Up Kicks": The year's catchiest rock tune was actually last year's catchiest too — it just took folks a while to realize it. Hazy, loping and scratchy like a mohair sweater, it recalls a headier era when bands wrote ultra-hooky singles about ultra-dark things (Eels' "Novocaine for the Soul," the Smashing Pumpkins' "Today," etc.) and earned repeated spins on radio as a result. Also known as the 1990s. 11. Rihanna, "We Found Love": A few weeks ago, someone told me that this would ultimately end up being Rihanna's signature hit and, at the time, I sort of laughed him off. I mean, did he remember "Umbrella"? But, the more I think about it, he may be right. Or at least on the right track. From the icy synth strains to Calvin Harris' hard-charging pre-chorus, it most certainly is the song that best represents pop, circa 2011, and given RiRi's standing in the field, perhaps in time, it will become her set-closing number too. For now, at least, I'm content to bask in "Love's" masterful mix of the carnal and, well, the club. 10. Britney Spears, "Till the World Ends": I have been accused (many times) of being a Brit basher and, sure, that's probably true, but not even I could deny this song. Super-charged star-burst synthesizers, robo-vocals and, of course, that iconic "Woah-Oh-Oh" chantalong, it's the party jam for the post-apocalyptic future. And because of all that, it's also an important song; not only a reminder that Britney is still capable of making truly terrific pop music, but that, really, she never stopped. And coming from one of her most ardent critics, that's high praise indeed. 09. Beyoncé, "Love on Top": You wanted a throwback jam, you've got a throwback jam. Big, bold, brassy and blissed-out, it represents everything B was going for on her 4 album, recalling roiling old R&B classics and the supreme diva-tude of the all-time greats. Sure, I could've gone for something like "Run the World (Girls)" or even "Countdown," but "Love on Top" is where it all clicks, sublimely so. Joy for days, which, given our dire times, made this one an absolute lifesaver. Oh, and as is the case with all of her best tunes, Beyoncé belts here. And really, what else do you need? 08. Nickelback, "Bottoms Up": Take away my cred card, but I am unapologetically in awe of this song. I wrote an entire column about its boozy brilliance earlier this year, but suffice to say, it is without a doubt the greatest thing Nickelback will ever do, in that they are first and foremost a party band, and this is their ultimate party jam: a song about getting supremely sh--faced, about drinking everything from Jim Beam to "straight gasoline," complete with a crushing, ALL-CAPS chorus and appropriately chugging riffs. Oh, and at one point, Chad Kroeger rhymes "bar" with "fire," mostly because he can. Hammer down, now and forever. 07. Bright Eyes, "The Ladder Song": For as much noise as Conor Oberst is capable of making, it's often the quieter moments where his rickety, ramshackle genius shines brightest. And "Ladder Song" — a heartbreakingly raw tribute to a friend who committed suicide — is not only his quietest, it's one of his best. Backed by little more than a piano and a handful of otherworldly room tones, Oberst plumbs the depths of despair, his voice reedy and wavering, and, when he reaches bottom, discovers there are small beauties that make life worth living. It's too bad, he ultimately laments, that his friend didn't discover them too. The year's most achingly beautiful song, by a hair-raising mile. 06. Drake, "Take Care": There are no short

Best Movie Deaths Of 2011

From 'Harry Potter' to 'Drive,' MTV News mourns — and praises — the year's best fictional deaths.
By Kevin P. Sullivan

It is traditional at the end of the year to look back on those we have lost in Hollywood. Usually this means a poignant montage of actors, actresses and crew members during the Academy Awards, but it should also be noted that plenty of fictional passings occurred in 2011 as well.

They may have been memorable, sad, thrilling or even funny, but each movie death meant something, and if we were to look back on the characters that passed away this year, these are the five that would get the biggest applause.

It should noted that this article contains nothing but spoilers.

Sebastian Shaw (Kevin Bacon in "X-Men: First Class")
All it took was a coin through the skull to remind us why Kevin Bacon should be in more movies. His character, Sebastian Shaw, lived large and in style, choosing a submarine as his method of world travel and double-breasted suits as his villainous costume. When Magneto finally met up with him to serve up some revenge extra cold, Shaw ate it in one of the most memorable scenes of 2011.

Fred Weasley (James Phelps in "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2")
Many characters didn't live to see the end of the Battle of Hogwarts, but none hurt as much as the demise of one-half of the ginger-haired duo. George may have lost an ear in Part 1, but he lost a twin brother during the series finale, and we were there with him. At the very least, we can all remember the fun times we had together and rest assured that there is still one genetically identical person walking Diagon Alley.

Beth Emhoff (Gwyneth Paltrow in "Contagion")
The look of terror on Paltrow's face from the trailer may rank among some of the year's most horrifying movie images. Beth Emhoff's death early in the film starts the chain reaction that sets the film's wheels in motion, but none of the millions of deaths caused by the virus are shown with as much intimacy. She may have been patient zero, but she'll always be #1 in our hearts.

Shannon (Bryan Cranston in "Drive")
Bryan Cranston's Shannon didn't have much time to accept his fate, and neither did we. Before we knew it, Bernie Rose (played by Albert Brooks) had declared it "over." Even the toughest of moviegoers had to flinch at the sight of the razor blade cutting through the neighborly mechanic's arm. Shannon added both comic relief and charm to a movie that benefitted so greatly because of it.

Planet Earth in "The Tree of Life" and "Melancholia"
The character we're all closest with bit the dust not once but twice this year at the movies. It's never an easy thing, watching the planet you've grown up on destroyed — just ask Princess Leia. But never has the destruction of our home world been shown with as much stunning cinematography as it was in mouth of these art house hits.

Lil Wayne Is Our #3 Top Newsmaker Of 20111676330

Tha Carter IV release, I Am Still Music Tour and 'MTV Unplugged' highlight Young Money general's year.
By Rob Markman

It's a common misconception that going to jail can make a rapper hot. Other than Tupac, who emerged from his mid-1990s prison bid a bigger star than he was when he went in, most artists struggle to develop post-prison musical dominance: Shyne has yet to capitalize on his almost nine-year bid, Gucci Mane has spent most of the year behind bars, and T.I. is just now starting to put his troubles behind him.

Credit Lil Wayne with beating the odds and becoming one of MTV News' #3 Top Newsmaker of the Year. When you think of the Best Artists of 2011 — Lady Gaga, Adele, Katy Perry, the Throne — none of them had to face what Wayne did. It was November 4, 2010, when Weezy was released from his eight-month prison bid for attempted gun possession — not much time to prepare for the year to come. Still, when it was all said and done, Wayne's Tha Carter IV dominated charts, and his I Am Still Music Tour — which consisted of 78 shows across Africa, Australia and North America — grossed more than $47 million. Weezy practically lived on the Billboard charts, and Nicki Minaj and Drake, two artists signed to his Young Money record label, left a huge stamp on the past 12 months as well. Not long after the curtain closed on 2010, fans were anticipating Tha Carter IV. And while it took a little longer than first predicted, Wayne was far from a musical recluse. On January 3, Chris Brown tweeted a link to his now-omnipresent hit "Look at Me Now," and while the spacey smash might have been a winner on its own, Wayne's appearance on the third verse damn-near guaranteed tens of thousands of radio spins. In March, Tunechi premiered his "Inception"-inspired Carter IV video for "6 Foot 7 Foot" on MTV. A few weeks later, MTV News was there as the YM general opened his I Am Still Music Tour in Rhode Island, and we checked in on him as he eventually took his concert across the world. Weezy's live show set him apart from the rest of the year's artists. Aside from his own tour, MTV saw Wayne play Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival and Bamboozle, and he even had his own "MTV Unplugged" special in June. Oh yeah, and Tunechi closed out this year's MTV Video Music Awards with a rocked-out stage show.

Then, when the moment of truth finally arrived, Weezy dropped Tha Carter IV on August 29, and fans ate it up — 964,000 of them during its first week on shelves. Of course, we partied with him the night of the album's release. It's hard to deny a guy who dominated radio with his own singles ("How to Love" and "She Will") as well as with songs he was featured on (Chris Brown's "Look at Me Now," Kelly Rowland's "Motivation" and DJ Khaled's "I'm On One"). It's hard to deny a guy who mixed rap, rock and pop in his 2011 live shows, bringing fans of multiple genres together. And it's hard to deny a guy who guided the careers of both Nicki Minaj and Drake — two superstars in their own right. There is no science to why Wayne is so successful. Artists like Jay-Z and Kanye West or Katy Perry and Britney Spears come off as far more calculated, while most times, Weezy seemingly wings it. What other MC would wear animal-print jeggings during the VMAs just minutes before his album is released? Tune doesn't care, though. It's Wayne's world, and we all just live in it. Makes you wonder what would happen if Katy Perry ever gets locked up ... MTV continues our Best of 2011 coverage by looking back at the biggest pop-culture stories of the year. As we count down the newsmakers that mattered to you most, also check out our Best Artists, Best Songs, Best MTV Live Performances and Best EDM Artists of 2011.
