Eminem, Nirvana Pave Way For 2011 VMA Best New Artist

Big Sean, Foster the People, Kreayshawn, Tyler, the Creator or Wiz Khalifa will follow in their footsteps come Sunday.
By Gil Kaufman

We're all rookies at some point, but when it comes to the MTV Video Music Awards' Best New Artist category, you only get one shot at being the new kid on the block. And for this year's nominees — Big Sean, Foster the People, Kreayshawn, Tyler, the Creator and Wiz Khalifa — now is their time to shine and join an illustrious list of previous winners that includes Lady Gaga, Guns N' Roses, Justin Bieber and 50 Cent.

Since the very first Moonman was handed out in this category in 1984, MTV has a pretty stellar track record for picking artists who either went on to superstardom or at least represent a very specific moment in time (we're looking at you, Jesus Jones).

While hip-hop heavy, this year's nominees span a pretty wide range of styles, from Kreayshawn's bawdy, viral sensation "Gucci Gucci" to Khalifa's day-in-the-life "Black and Yellow," Tyler's bugged-out, arty "Yonkers," Big Sean's penthouse-rockin' "My Last" and the DIY feel of the lone rock entry, Foster the People's "Pumped Up Kicks."

Who's gonna win? Well, you'll have to tune in Sunday to find out, but chances are whoever takes home the prize will be a name you'll be hearing for a good, long time. The very first BNA Moonman went to the Eurythmics in 1984, notable not just because of that British synth soul duo's long, hit-filled career, but because they beat out a singer that went on to quite a career herself: Madonna.

Over the years, such beloved bands as Crowded House (1987), GN'R (1988), Nirvana (1992), Eminem (1999), Alicia Keys (2001), 50 (2003) and Gaga (2009) have taken the prize.

"I will always remember Best New Artist," Lady Gaga told MTV News recently, recalling how she surprised Eminem by asking him to hold her Moonman as she thanked "God and the gays" and took off her red lace mask. "The first time that MTV recognized me, that changed my life."

Of course, there have also been some winners whose video work represented their artistic and commercial high point, such as 'Til Tuesday (1985), A-ha (1986), Michael Penn (1990), the aforementioned Jesus Jones (1991), Fiona Apple (1997) and Macy Gray (2000).

Even more surprising are the commercial heights reached by a number of nominated acts who didn't win the award but went on to some pretty stellar careers regardless, including Whitney Houston (1986), Lenny Kravitz (1990), Beck and Green Day (1994), Kid Rock (1999), Christina Aguilera and Pink (2000), Coldplay (2001), Katy Perry (2008) and Nicki Minaj (2010).

And, of course, there are the nominees who make you think: Really? Sure, Timbuk3's "The Future's So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades" was fun, but Best New Artist? The same might be said for others whose careers never quite reached their initial peaks, from Neneh Cherry (1989) to Jane Child (1990), Gerardo (1991), Chumbawamba (1998), Orgy (1999), the Darkness (2004) and James Blunt (2006).

Viewers can vote for Best New Artist by visiting VMA.MTV.com online or m.mtv.com on their mobile phone. In addition, Best New Artist text voting is open to all wireless carrier subscribers by texting BNA to 66333. Voting continues through the show, live on Sunday.

The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday, August 28, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8. See the list of nominees, revisit last year's highlights and vote for Best New Artist by visiting VMA.MTV.com.

'Breaking Dawn' Soundtrack: Bruno Mars Makes It 'Rain'

Mars' 'It Will Rain' first song announced from upcoming 'Twilight' album.
By Kara Warner

It's not enough that he's one of the most in-demand singer/songwriters working today, or that almost every song he cranks out is a chart-topper. Bruno Mars will now win over the millions upon millions of "Twilight" fans with "It Will Rain," which was announced as the first song on the "Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1." soundtrack.

Summit Entertainment broke the news via the "Twilight" Facebook page, along with a photo of the artwork for Mars' single.

The artwork looks like a painting, seemingly created with watercolors or oil paints. The picture depicts a brooding Mars in black silhouette, holding an umbrella in one hand, a bottle of something in the other. He's sitting in a chair, posture slightly slumped and legs spread out in front of him. The background is colorful, with swirls of paint dripping down the frame. "It Will Rain" is written in prominent thick black lettering to the right of Mars.

In knowing Mars' style, we expect the song to be sweeping, epic and possibly heart-wrenching. In being named to the illustrious ranks of "Twilight" soundtrack artists, the rising star and VMA nominee joins artists like Paramore, the Black Keys and Muse.

When we last checked in with "Breaking Dawn" director Bill Condon at Comic-Con, he confirmed they were putting serious thought into the crafting of the soundtrack, courtesy of composer Carter Burwell, who scored the first movie, as well as careful consideration of which acts to include. And while the director would not confirm Pattinson's inclusion on the soundtrack, he hinted that some of the musically inclined castmembers might lend their talents to a track or two.

"We're just figuring out [the soundtrack] now," Condon said during MTV News' "Breaking Dawn" Comic-Con takeover. "We have a lot of [songs]. We have like 15, I think."

Check out everything we've got on "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1."

Coldplay Call Rihanna Collabo 'Favorite Bit' On Mylo Xyloto

Band talked to MTV News about unexpected team-up at this weekend's Austin City Limits fest.
By James Montgomery, with reporting by Gil Kaufman

Coldplay

Last week, Coldplay made headlines when they announced they'd be teaming with Rihanna on "Princess of China," one of 14 tracks on their upcoming Mylo Xyloto album.

And while the news may have left some fans a tad, uh, puzzled, Coldplay say the collaboration was born out of a desire to keep reinventing their sound — not to mention necessity — as they told MTV News this past weekend at the Austin City Limits Festival.

"Well, our new record is sort of a story; it's not quite a musical, but it's dangerously close. There's a bit of a love-story thread, so we really needed someone to sing even higher than me," frontman Chris Martin laughed. "[It's] hard, but very possible. You need to be a female really. For all [drummer] Will [Champion]'s good intentions, he [can't do it] ...

"Can't get that high, not these days," Champion added.

"... So, in like a dream scenario, we had a song that I'd secretly kind of written to see if Rihanna would want to sing it," Martin continued. "And then the rest of the band wanted to keep it, so we came up with the idea of asking her to sing it with us, and, to our great surprise, she said OK."

And as is the case with pretty much everything on Xyloto (due October 25), "Princess of China" finds the band expanding their sonic palette and pushing musical boundaries ... which, they'll have you know, is exactly the point these days. Because, after more than a decade of albums — and sales of more than 50 million worldwide — they feel they've earned the right to try something new.

"Well, her bit on our record is my favorite bit ... when the song came out, it sort of asked for her to be on it. And I think at this point, we have nothing to lose, and so we've been trying some new things and trying to break down the perceived boundaries between different types of music," Martin explained. "Because from where we're sitting, it seems like you can try and sound any way you like nowadays. You don't have to be in a rock box or a hip-hop box or a pop box, and I think it's fun when you embrace that idea."

Kendrick Lamar, Jay Rock Marvel At Carter IV Sales

'That was a cold marketing strategy,' Compton MC K.Dot says of Lil Wayne's VMA album push on 'RapFix Live.'
By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway

Everyone is talking about Lil Wayne and his super successful first-week sales of Tha Carter IV.

On Wednesday (September 7), after news officially broke that Weezy had sold 964,000 copies of C4, — more than 300,000 of which were purchased digitally through iTunes — Kendrick Lamar, Jay Rock and Freddie Gibbs sat on the "RapFix Live" couch and touched on Tunechi's win in the face of illegal online downloading.

"I think it's a great thing. First and foremost, the Internet — I have no negative [or] bad words about the Internet," Kendrick said. "When I was distributing my music locally in Compton, Gardena, Watts, I was stuck right there, I couldn't get the word to spread," he recalled of his California-area 'hoods.

Now, the young spitter is known worldwide — on the Web and beyond.

Although C4 leaked several days before it hit retail outlets on August 29, it didn't seem to affect the first-week tally too much. And this past summer, both Game and the Throne, like Wayne, debuted at #1 on the Billboard albums chart. So while some still moan and groan, blaming the Net for the music industry's overall sales slump, Kendrick points to Wayne, Game, Jay-Z and Kanye West as shining examples."It shows that people still support music and wanna go out there and buy, especially if it's good music," he said.

Birdman says Cash Money didn't purchase any copies of Carter IV

Jay Rock was equally impressed, especially considering that Wayne had to reestablish himself after serving an eight-month prison term in 2010.

"When the big homey told me Wayne sold a million records, I was like, 'Wow, that is big for him coming out of jail and everything; that's a good look,' " Rock said.

K. Dot noted the marketing strategy that had Wayne closing out the 2011 Video Music Awards, and then releasing his album digitally on iTunes right afterward. "That was a cold marketing strategy," he smiled.
