R-Kush hopes to make it big

THREE years ago, R-Kush (Rory McIntyre) began taking his musical career seriously.

Before, the auto mechanic/cook said he contented with just hanging around his artiste friends like Mavado.

"I know him personally, and what really drove me to take my music to the next level is seeing him succeed," R-Kush told Observer.

His music, he said, is not just about entertainment, but a way of bring people to the right way.

Having accepted the message of His Imperial Majesty Haile Selassie five years ago, he said: "Just like the pastor preaches his message, my music is the vehicle."

Born and raised in Stony Hill, St Andrew, R-Kush attended Oberlin High School and always felt that he had good writing skills. Leaving Oberlin, he went on the Kingston Technical High School where he began studying auto mechanics.

"I didn't get to finish my studies," he said. "As you know, I have to feed and take care of my family. But music was always with me — while I was working on the cars, while I was cooking, I was always singing."

Currently, R-Kush is signed to Uptown Hooligans (UTH) Music, which has done work with Richie Spice and Ras Penco. R-Kush said in the next five years he wants to take his music to the globe.

"Get ready for a Kush-attack. I want to cover the globe, go to the Grammy's," he said.

So far, he's performed on Follow The Arrow, Negril Escape, Wiki Waka and has two videos on YouTube — Mek Sure and Yuh Mad.

But what make R-Kush different from others in the industry?

"I am a reggae artiste, positive and uplifting. Right now, the music is going good, but as artiste, we have to be responsible about what we put out. It has to be in line with the creator," R-Kush said.
